LOS ANGELES–Astor Classics, a world-class automotive and communications museum that showcases 300 gleaming classic cars, hundreds of antique telephones and restored radios, colorful gasoline pumps and antique slot machines, will be the site of an Armenian Film Foundation event on Saturday, March 15, starting at 6 p.m.
The Astor Classics museum in Anaheim, CA, was founded by Art Astor, a Fresno-born Armenian who has been a leader in the Southern California radio broadcast industry for more than 50 years. Astor’s impeccably restored and kept vintage auto collection ranges from Packards to Pontiacs, Morgans to Mustangs. He owns Howard Hughes’ 1940 Cadillac Formal Town Sedan, Clark Gable’s 1936 Jensen Ford soft top and Jackie Gleason’s 1950 Chrysler Town & Country Woody sedan, to name just a few. Each car is special in some way, whether it is a rare vehicle or has an interesting history, and every car is a “driver” ‘s Astor takes each one out for a spin every few weeks.
Additionally, Astor has created a museum which houses the world’s largest collection of working and beautifully restored antique telephones and radios. He has numerous collections of model trains, gas pumps, antique slot machines, pedal cars and movie memorabilia.
The Armenian Film Foundation is honored to fete the 70th birthday of Walter Karabian, one of its founding board members. Also born in Fresno, Karabian, a lawyer, was one of the youngest men to ever be elected to the California State Assembly, where he served from 1966 to 1974. He was appointed Majority Leader in 1971 and returned to his legal practice in 1974.
An active participant in Armenian community affairs, Karabian has served on the board of the Armenian Film Foundation since its establishment in 1979 and was involved in the formation of the Armenian Assembly. He was instrumental in securing appropriations of almost $900,000 from the California Legislature for the making of the Foundation’s two seminal documentaries on the Armenian Genocide. Karabian is the recipient of the St. Gregory the Illuminator Medal from Karekin I, the Catholicos of All Armenia’s in Etchmiadzin, Armenia; the Armenian National Committee’s Man of the Year, and numerous other honors for his work on behalf of the Armenian people.
The March 15 event includes a lavish buffet dinner and a grand silent auction to benefit the Armenian Film Foundation’s third and final documentary in the Witnesses trilogy on the Armenian Genocide, called Caravans along the Euphrates.
