YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"Conjecture thinking must be eradicated in the Prosecutor’s office and its activity must be transformed so that to serve the law and not the authorities," Prosecutor General of Armenia Henrik Khachatrian said at an August 26 news conference devoted to his 100 days in office.
He noted that though figures say that growth of criminal cases is observed in Armenia–(up by 232 cases in the last seven months)– such statistics–relative to previous years–are indeed on the decline.
The criminal situation in Armenia–as compared to that in other CIS countries–according to Khachatrian–is relatively good. For example–there are 17 crimes per 10,000 people in Armenia–while in Russia – 87–Belarus – 65–Ukraine -59.
The number of premeditated murders is decreasing. That of crimes connected with drugs and drug business decreased by 1 percent.
On the other hand–according to Khachatrian–the rate of crimes committed by the underage has jumped considerably by 67 percent.
That fact was explained by the absence of structures dealing with infantile criminality. The rate of fraud and embezzlement has risen as well.
