YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian Minister of Defense Serge Sargsian–the Secretary of the Council of Security attached to the Armenian President–and Vladimir Rushailo–the Secretary of the Russian Federation Council of Security–signed an amendment to the protocol on cooperation between the staffs of the Councils of Security of the two countries and a joint statement on May 29.
"Issues providing stability and security in the Caucasus have priority importance for Russia," said Rushailo during a press conference held the same day. He mentioned that "the Caucasian four" is considered–in this respect–as a prospective political tool. The next sitting of the Secretaries of the Councils of Security is to be held in Tbilisi October 2002.
Rushailo reported that the positions of the sides about the main directions of cooperation in the sphere of providing national–regional and international security were specified during the visit.
The wide range of issues of the Armenian-Russian relations–including military–military-technical cooperation–as well as training military personnel–was discussed. Issues connected with struggle against international terrorism–organized criminality and the illegal circulation of drugs were discussed with the Ministers of Internal Affairs and National Security.
