YEREVAN (Azg–Armenpress)–Chairman of the Russian Duma’s Defense Committee–Lieutenant-General Lev Rokhlin–was scheduled to visit Yerevan after his trip to Tbilisi on Tuesday–but returned to Moscow without an explanation.
During a regular session of the Russian parliament’s lower house last month–Rokhlin gave Armenia an ultimatum to withdraw its troops from Karabakh before April 1997. Otherwise Russia would lose Azerbaijan as an ally–which would not be good for Russia economically–he said. Rokhlin also said that Russia will never declare war on Turkey because of Armenia.
Armenian officials have been unable to meet or speak to Rokhlin regarding his ultimatum. Rokhlin has reportedly been avoiding such meetings or conversations.
