MOSCOW (Tert.am)–“If Nagorno-Karabakh declares independence, then Russia must recognize that,” a leading member of the Russian Parliament said on Friday, speaking at the European and Asian Media Forum in Moscow.
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the Vice-Chair of the State Duma and Leader of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia Vladimir Zhirinovsky, said he saw Russia’s recognition of Karabakh as the only way out of the current quagmire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
“Otherwise, Azerbaijan and Armenia will never agree on whom Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to. I have neither an Armenian- nor an Azerbaijani-leaning position,” said the Russian politician.
According to Zhirinovsky, Russia needs peace and stability in the South Caucasus.
“If that is secured, then let Armenia make ties with whoever it so chooses, whether that be Turkey, Iran, Georgia, or Azerbaijan,” he said. “But if there’s aggression, then we will stand by the victim countries and completely wipe out the aggressor.”
Asked by a journalist what is Russia’s role in Armenia’s rapprochement with Turkey, Zhirinovsky said: “We wouldn’t want Turkey, in that rapprochement, to make use of the entire South Caucasus in order to increase its influence.”
Does that mean theyre gonna recognize independence or not?
If Zhirinovsky calls for recognition of Karabakh “independence”, it means two things:
1. The idea is being discussed in Kremlin
2. Kremlin is blackmailing Azerbaijan
Recognition of Karabakh “independence” is clearly Azeri-hostile position and an explicit declaration of support to Armenia. Saying that Zhirinovsky is neutral is a foolish attempt to fool the West.
The sad reality is that some Western political policy-makers actively participate in this cinical game and keep repeating whatever Kremlin says. This feature was well-demonstrated after the Russian invasion of Georgia. Quite a few people in the West said that “Georgia provoked Russia” and “Russia did not violate the international law”.
To answer Aren’s question, Zhirinovsky’s statement only means that Kremlin is blackmailing Azerbaijan.
No, but it is a nice little waring to aliyev to stfu. Also, the turks get the message too, the Caucasus is Russia’s backyard, not turkeys.
We wonder unlike our adversary Why Armenians never ever take advantage from this rare opportunities to reiterate and spread the Russian Duma’s leader Mr. Zhrinovsky’s statements?
Zhirinovsky has always respected the Armenians. He has very loudly and openly spoken about the Armenian Genocide and critisized Turkey. Again this great man is standing up for Armenian rights. Thank you Mr. Zhirinovsky.
I’ve always declared Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the Vice-Chair of the State Duma and Leader of Liberal Democratic Party of Russia is a great personality.
The Russians should’t forget 300,oo0 Armenians who were killed in Second world war
Never before all big boys seek security and peace in the region at the same time. This is a golden moment for Armenia. Armenia should put all of her demands on the table including returning Western Armenia, which without it, she will not be able to survive as a viable independent state in long run.
The problem is that the current officials have no vision of Greater Armenia.
Aren i would like Xarabax to declare its independence and than Russia will recognise Xarabax also and if azerbeijan decides to attack Xarabax or Armenia than hell will brake loose and our troops most likely will have breakfast in baku in few days as we know azerbeijans army is all talk if they new bynow that Xarabax or Armenia was not ready militarily or mentally they would of attackes us long time ago as for Mr. Jirinovsky read between the line what he is saying is a great warning to Baku if they try to attack XARABAX or ARMENIA THAN THE AGRESSOR WHICH WILL BE azerbeijan will be completely wiped out as for turkish reaprochment with these so called protocol that will never happen turkey does not want to lose azerbeijan as a so called brother but than again like i said the world and including Washingtom hopefully will turn around and tell turkey that what they have created is a night mare and there comes the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the USA
Doesn’t mean anything… it’s just someone speaking at a forum. If Russia does recognise Artsakh though, that would be a very interesting scenario!
