YEREVAN (Armenpress)–According to Armenia’s Energy Minister Karen Galustyan–Russia will now manage the Medzamor nuclear power plant.
He said experts of both countries are designing the principles of such management and a working group will draft a business plan to manage the plant.
"The project has many benefits–however it needs to be thoroughly analyzed," said Galustyan.
In the meantime–President Robert Kocharian ruled out the possibility of selling the state-owned facility. "The nuclear power plant should be the exclusive property of the Republic of Armenia"–he told Russian journalists. He stressed the discussions were only about joint management.
The Medzamor Power Plant was commissioned in 1979 and was shut down in 1989 after the devastating earthquake. In 1996 Russian experts helped restart its second reactor. Currently–the plant produces 40 percent of Armenian electricity.
