SOCHI (Itar-Tass)–The foundation of a Russo-Armenian friendship monument was laid on Monday–to coincide with the 170th anniversary of East Armenia’s accession to Russia.
Deputy Chairman of the City Municipal Council Armen Melkumov said that funds to build the monument came from donations from Sochi residents.
Representatives from more than one hundred nationalities are known to live in Sochi today. The Armenian community–the largest minority group is one third of the city’s population.
Melkumov stressed that "the local authorities are attaching great importance to the consolidation of international ties and to the development of national cultures. Armenian Culture Days are regularly held in Sochi. Popular artists from Armenia frequently give concert performances. And–construction of an Armenian Apostolic Church was recently completed the Adler District of Sochi."
