AKHALKALAKI (Armenpress) Ahead of the January 4 elections in Georgia–presidential contender Mikhail Saakashvili’s National Movement scurried to establish chapters in regions of the country where it did not have branches–including the predominantly Armenian-populated Akhalkalak region.
According to the local A-Info news agency–both the current regional authorities and the opposition are taking a keen interest in the region. Saakashvili–however–has chosen to work with the incumbent regional authorities who backed the ousted Shevardnadze’s For New Georgia bloc–Saakashvili’s main rival–in the November 2 parliamentary elections.
