ALTADENA–Chairman of the Board of Directors, Ara Assilian, recently announced that Sahag-Mesrob Armenian School had acquired a new, much needed, campus in Altadena. This is Sahag-Mesrob’s second campus in Altadena. The main campus, which sits on the beautiful foothills of Altadena, will be joined by the new campus, which sits on 3.3 acres of land and contains eight buildings.
It is the school’s intent to fully operate at this new site on the opening day of the 2008-2009 school year. Sahag-Mesrob plans to provide full details to the community of the plans for the use of this new facility as well as the current Maiden Lane campus during the school’s upcoming open houses in February and March 2008.
Sahag-Mesrob School has served the San Gabriel Valley area since 1981. According to Principal Shahe Garabedian, the school has worked hard to meet the needs of its students from the outset. “The mission of the school is to provide our Armenian children the best academic education, filled and inspired with spiritual and cultural excellence in a safe environment. With God’s help and with the support of our Armenian community, the best is yet to come. We want every Armenian to be proud of having Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School serving the needs of our young children” said Garabedian.
Currently, the school has 385 students from pre-K to 12th grades. The school operates on two campuses; one is the main campus, which enrolls pre-school to 5th grade, and the second is a leased campus, which enrolls 6th to 12th grades. Since the lease on the second campus is set to expire in June, the school board acted quickly to find a new location for the school.
The school board of directors, faculty, and administration thank all those who prayed fervently and worked hard to find this new campus location.
Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School, including the high school, is fully accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).
In this time of joy, celebration, and thanksgiving, the school invites all Armenian families who live in Pasadena, Altadena, and the San Gabriel Valley to visit the school during the upcoming open houses in February and March. Those who attend will receive details about the plans of the school and will be given a chance to register their children from Nursery to 12th grades for the next academic year.
Naturally, this is a major investment for the future. Of the $7 million urchase price, the school has borrowed $3.2 million from Discovery Bank, and $2.3 million from AMAA. The Board of Directors will commence a comprehensive fundraising campaign to repay the loan as soon as possible. In due course, an additional building expansion of up to $5 million will occur in order to consolidate the school in one location.
Southern California is the most important Armenian community in the Diaspora. Building and strengthening an Armenian school is the solemn duty of every Armenian. The school urges the community to provide a helping hand in making Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School the crown jewel of Southern California.
