YEREVAN (Armenpress)–A member of Karabakh’s parliament Vasily Atajanian–a witness in the trial of Samvel Babayan told Wednesday’s court session that on December 14–1999–Samvel Babayan–before his dismissal from his post called Atajanian to his office and insisted on his signing of an appeal calling for Karabakh president Arkady Ghoukassian’s impeachment. Atajanian told the court he refused to sign and tried to talk Babayan out of his intention–but the latter was implacable.
Investigator Armen Sarkisian–who had interrogated Babayan in the course of the preliminary investigation–categorically denied allegations about use of psychotherapeutic means against Babayan. According to his statement–a man cannot formulate precisely his thoughts under the effect of psychotherapeutic means..
Sarkisian stated that in his testimonies Babayan had confessed that the act of terrorism had been committed upon his instructions and expressed regret that "it is my fault that the guys fell into a trap." Sarkisian reproached the media–which groundlessly exaggerated the issue of using violence against the accused by the investigation to coerce him into admitting his involvement in the assassination attempt.
Former serviceman Ovik Beglarian denied Babayan’s testimonies that he allegedly told him to kill Ghoukassian. Beglarian noted that he had been very close to Babayan–however–he had never talked to him about that issue.
