YEREVAN (Armenpress)–President Serzh Sarkisian met Friday with Catholicos Karekin II and the members of the Supreme Spiritual Council of Edjmiadzin for talks on the problems facing the Armenian Diocese in Georgia.
According to the President’s press office, Sarkisian praised the close cooperation between the state and the Etchmiadzin, noting that “at times of hardship faith in God has always been the last hope of our people.”
“It’s due to the prayers of our nation and the great role of our Church that we have managed to pass the crossroads of the past years, have an independent state at the end of the 20th century and move forward,” Sarkisian added.
“The Armenian Apostolic Church is one of the oldest establishmen’s in the world that has been functioning for over 1 700 years. It’s also the most ancient cultural and educational establishment we have,” he told the visiting delegation. “It’s hard to imagine a more experienced and influential partner for the state institutions of the Republic of Armenia.”
Issues related to a draft law on celebrating National Identity Day in Armenia were also on the agenda of the talks.
The Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s parliamentary faction earlier this year presented a draft resolution to the National Assembly on “holidays and memorial days,” proposing that August 11 be designated “National Armenian Identity Day.” The draft law also called for its preceding five days–August 6-11–be designated Navasartian Holiday observance days, during which national events (conferences, celebrations, cultural gatherings) would be organized.
August 11 coincides with the beginning of the traditional Armenian calendar.
