YEREVAN (Armenpress)–President Serzh Sarkisian met Wednesday with the president of NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly, Jos? Lello for talks on Armenia’s ongoing relations with the US-led military alliance.
According to Sarkisian’s press office, the meeting mainly focused on Armenia’s Individual Partnership Action Plan with NATO. During talks, Sarkisian said he is pleased with the current level of cooperation between Armenia and NATO, noting that Armenia views the partnership as an important party of Armenia’s national security
According to Sarkisian, the partnership program provides Armenia with the expertise and assistance it needs to have a modern defense system that corresponds to international norms.
The two also discussed the situation in the region following the conflict in Georgia.
Lello spoke of Armenia’s role in ensuring regional security and noted that the Euro-Atlantic Alliance expects to actively cooperate with Yerevan in ensuring the security of the region.
Lello also commended Sarkisian for inviting Turkish President Abdullah Gul to Armenia to watch a World Cup qualifying match between the countries’ national soccer teams.
Sarkisian told Lello that Armenia’s primary aim “is to establish rationale, logical relations with Turkey to make stability and cooperation in the region a source of welfare for our peoples.”
