YEREVAN (Armenpress)—Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian received co-rapporteurs of PACE Monitoring Committee for Armenia Alan Meale and Giuseppe Galati on November 23.
The presidential press service reported that Sarkisian highlighted that these regular meetings give an opportunity to assess the reform process in Armenia by people who are well aware of European values. Sarkisian highly valued the role of the co-rapporteurs in terms of monitoring the reform implementation process and thanked for the works done.
The co-rapporteurs documented that Armenia’s transition to a parliamentary democracy is happening in a speedy and consistent manner, though, according to them, there are still some minor issues to be solved. “Mr. President, your contribution to democratic processes in Armenia has been really significant during this period. We wish to officially invite you on behalf of the Council of Europe to visit the Council of Europe and speak about Armenia at the PACE,” the co-rapporteurs of PACE Monitoring Committee for Armenia said during the meeting.
Sarkisian accepted the invitation, according to the press service, and stressed that it is a good opportunity to introduce the works and issues in Armenia from a high platform.
During the meeting, the sides referred to the upcoming parliamentary elections, the works to harmonize the legislation of Armenia with the adopted Constitution, development of cooperation with the CoE and in this context highlighted the launch of the new Action Plan.
The parties exchanged thoughts over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement process.
Galati and Meale visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial, Tsitsernakaberd, on November 23, read a statement on the Armenian National Assembly’s press service.
The guests laid flowers at the memorial with a moment of silence.
They also visited the Armenian Genocide Museum Institute to learn more about the Armenian Genocide.
“Governments should recognize what has happened in reality. People must be informed, genocide should be taught at schools and everything should be done to prevent their reoccurrence,” Meale said.
Galati said that the CoE has been working to stabilize relations between countries in order to avoid such tragedies.
