ROME—President Serzh Sarkisian Monday met with Pope Benedict XVI, who praised relations between Yerevan and the Vatican.
The two leaders exchanged ideas about cooperation between the Holy See of Etchmiadzin and the Catholic Church and highlighted the importance of the role of the two churches in society. The parties also emphasized the importance of bringing up generations in the spirit of Christian values.
Later, Sarkisian met with the State Secretary of Vatican, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. The leaders emphasized the importance of deepening bilateral relations, with Sarkisian highlighting the importance of strengthening cultural relations between the two nations. Sarkisian also thanked the Vatican for preserving Armenian culture abroad.
The parties stressed that the appointment of ambassadors to Armenia and Vatican would provide additional impetus for the strengthening bilateral relations.
Sarkisian toured St. Peter’s Basilica, as well as the Armenian Catholic Church in the Vatican.
