YEREVAN (APA)–President Serzh Sarkisian Tuesday thanked his Turkish counterpart for Turkey’s assistance during the 1998 earthquake, the Anatolian News Agency Reported.
In a letter written to President Abdullah Gul, Sarkisian said Armenia’s “citizens are grateful for the help and support from Turkey and Turkish citizens after the earthquake.”
Dozens of countries contributed to the rescue efforts after the 7.0 earthquake hit Spitak on December 7, 1988. Armenia’s neighbors, Turkey included, provided immediate assistance, dispatching helicopters and teams of rescue workers to the disaster zone within hours of the tremors.
“We are sure that humane actions will always be remembered, they increase kindness and light the world,” the letter said.
