YEREVAN—The President of Armenia Serzh Sarkisian issued a statement in reaction to the Swiss government’s decision to appeal a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights that concluded that the Armenian Genocide can be publically denied as a matter of freedom of speech.
“This decision by the Swiss authorities is inspiring. Everyone knows that Switzerland has always been one of the most active human right advocates on the international arena, one of the most active governments fighting racial discrimination and xenophobia, and we expect Switzerland to make a correct decision,” the President said.
According to President Sarkisian, the decision of the Swiss Government is only a step in the right direction because the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) must still reverse its decision. “We are confident, however, that the Court will adopt a ruling that will not be offensive to peoples that have gone through genocide and the loss of their homeland and will not dishonor the memory of innocent victims.”
“We welcome the decision of Switzerland to request the referral of Doğu Perinçek to the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights’ revision,” Spokesman for the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tigran Balayan said in comments to Arminfo news agency.
“Consistency in the fight against the denial of the crime of genocide has an important role in the prevention of new crimes against humanity,” he added.
Bravo President Sarkissian, and thank you.
