YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Governmental Interdepartmental Committee jointly with the "Hushamatian" (The book of memory) organization held Tuesday a scientific conference on the problems of repression and forced resettlemen’s during Soviet times.
Those present tried to reveal the reasons for the tragedies of the 1920s-50s. It was pointed out that this work is facilitated now–as people can study the KGB’s archives which have been confidential for many years.
From now on Day of Memory of the Victims of Repression will be marked in Armenia. It was on the night of June 14–1949 that in accordance to the KGB’s plan about 3,000 families (12,000 people) were forced out of Armenia on freight trains to the Altai region. In connection with the anniversary of repression and resettlement a memorial plaque will be unveiled in Yerevan on June 14. A commemoration meeting at the State Opera House and other arrangemen’s will be held.
