BEIRUT–A two-day seminar/workshop focusing on issues confronting the resolution of the Armenian cause organized by the Armenian National Committee of Lebanon took place last week at the Riviera hotel–with the participation of high-level officials from the Lebanese government and legislature–as well as academic and religious circles.
During the three sessions of this seminar–the political and legal basis for national self-determination were discussed in relation with the issue of nationalities rights and sovereignty under international law. The issues of inviolability of borders and territorial integrity were also discussed.
Special emphasis was placed on expressions of self-determination within existing political crises around the world–especially as they relate to the Armenian cause and the Karabakh question.
The Republic of Armenia’s role within the ever-changing new world order–as well as the issue of the Armenian Genocide as collective memory in the context of political culture were also addressed as topics of this seminar.
Following welcoming remarks by Lebanon ANC representative Nora Bairakdarian–seminar sponsor Basem Sabuh–Lebanon’s Minister of Information–addressed the gathering. Lebanese academicians–parliament members and journalists also participated and made presentations during the seminar.
At the adjournment of the seminar–several important conclusions were reached–which included the concepts of sovereignty of nationalities–the imperative of executing the United Nations Charter on right to national self-determination and–most importantly–the Armenian cause in Karabakh–which continues to be defense of ancestral lands.
