GLENDALE—The Board of Regents of Prelacy Armenian Schools held its annual Professional Development Day on Thursday, November 10 at the Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Armenian School.
The seminar was attended by Prelacy Armenian School administrators, teachers, and staff. In addition, teachers and staff from Charlotte & Elise Merdinian Armenian Evangelical School also participated in the seminar. A total of 300 educators were in attendance.
Board of Regents member, Houri Keuroglian, kicked off the seminar by presenting the day’s agenda and providing a general overview of the scheduled sessions and presenters. After the Armenian and American national anthems, the Board of Regents treasurer and attorney Chris Keosian addressed the attendees. He expressed his appreciation to all the educators who were present at the seminar, and emphasized the importance of keeping up to date with changes in education. On behalf of the Board of Regents of Prelacy Armenian Schools Keosian thanked the administration and School Board of Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Armenian School for hosting the Annual Professional Development Day.
The agenda for the day was divided into three sessions. The first session was a keynote address by David Ghoogasian on the “Life at an Armenian School: Lessons Learned Along The Way.”
Ghoogasian is a Long-time educator, highly renowned lecturer who has been invited and presented at numerous domestic and international conferences, and previous principal of Mesrobian Armenian School. He reflected on his personal experiences and discussed the current challenges that teachers face, highlighting the significance of the role of teachers.
With personal and real life examples, Ghoogasian established that next to advancement of technology, the role of teachers will always remain essential and valuable and reminded the participants that each word and action by a teacher leaves a lasting impact on the minds and souls of students.
After the keynote address, the second session included seven workshops, during which the following topics were presented:
1. “Challenges In The Early Childhood Setting” presented by Dr. Ani Karayan. Preschool teachers participated in this workshop.
2. “Dealing With Difficult/Non-Compliant Student Behavior” presented by David Ghoogasian.
3. “Kids & the Law” presented by Mary Der-Parseghian, Esq.
4. “Teaching Beyond Tolerance: Ways To Eliminate Bias And Bullying” presented by Sally Myles.
5. “The Well-Managed Classroom: A Practical, Strength-Based Approach To Classroom Management” presented by Jill Grayson.
6. “Managing Stress During Difficult Interactions” presented by Anita Avedian and Rachel Goukassian.
7. “Reading Comprehension Strategies” presented by Dr. Janice Pilgreen.
The third and final session consisted of a state mandated sexual harassment prevention training for all participants. Attorney Nancy Doumanian, a specialist in the area of employment law, presented a video about sexual harassment prevention and discussed the California laws pertaining to sexual harassment with real life examples. Doumanian also discussed the prohibition and prevention of workplace harassment, the available remedies for harassment, and supervisory responsibilities.
The Annual Professional Development Day organized by the Board of Regents is a unique opportunity to gather all the educators of Armenian Schools to further advance their educational development. This seminar also serves as an opportunity for educators to come together, get acquainted with one another, and share their experiences.
