The Chair of the Socialist International (SI) Middle East Committee Thorbjorn Jagland–and the Secretary General of SI Luis Ayala–will be in Tel Aviv and Ramallah this week for discussions with SI Israeli and Palestinian member parties on the latest developmen’s in the region–as well as to reaffirm the SI’s support for the recently presented roadmap to a permanent two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The SI representatives will meet with leading members of Israel’s Labour Party–including Secretary General Ophir Pines–Shimon Peres–Benjamin Ben Eliezir–Amram Mitzna–among others–and with leading members of Meretz–including Yossi Sarid.
In Ramallah–they will meet with the President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) and leader of Fatah Yasser Arafat–head of the recently established cabinet of the PNA Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas–and PNA Foreign Minister Dr. Nabil Shaath.
The SI has welcomed the presentation of the Middle East roadmap for peace–expressing its full commitment to work toward the plan’s implementation.
The US State Department on April 30 released the text of the "roadmap" to a permanent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The roadmap specifies the steps for the two parties to take to reach a settlement–and a timeline for doing so–under the auspices of the United States–the European Union–the United Nations–and Russia.
