YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The student union of the Democratic Party of Armenia regularly organizes meetings with Armenian artists. The guest of the regular meeting held December 4 was the Rector of the Yerevan Institute of Dramatic Arts–Artist Sos Sargssyan. Various problems related to politics–the economy and culture were discussed during the meeting. The role of the youth–especially students–was emphasized during the meeting.
Sargssyan believes that we have excellent young people who have an advantage over the past generation. Among these advantages Sargssyan mentioned were more liberal views, and having an independent country where they can defend their rights and assert themselves. "However–for some reason or other–they don’t seem to consider this country to be theirs," Sargssyan stated sadly. "It is the young people that are supposed to initiate advancement–however our youth does not show enough activity. "They cannot or–perhaps–do not wish to engage in politics," said the artist–adding that getting engaged in politics does not mean creating a party of a few members–rather it means to be able to make the incumbent leaders act in keeping with the principles of justice–to be able to express one’s resentment against arbitrariness.
"At last–we must learn to live indepedently–Soviet rule has become history–there is no Moscow to tell us what to do and help us in certain matters. We must have greater appreciation of our rights and be loyal to our commitmen’s," Sargssyan emphasized.
The artist disagreed with the widespread opinion that because of the heavy social and economic conditions the people have forgotten or have no time to care about spiritual values. "Simply–we are trying to inculcate the Western morals in our country–however the things we’re implanting here are only the bubbles of Western art–while we still don’t see the bottom," Sargssyan concluded.
