STEPANAKERT (Armenpress)—Commenting on Wednesday’s decision by the European Parliament to support, “in principle,” the recognition of a Palestinian state, Artsakh’s presidential spokesman Davit Babayan said that Stepanakert welcomes any recognition based on the right to self-determination, especially if it complies with international law. Babayan noted, however, that the key issues of Palestine and Artsakh are “quite different from each other.”
Babayan said that Artsakh has adopted a “multilevel” recognition strategy. “The recognition of Artsakh first began from the local community level. Many said that it was not right and criticized us. Now the recognition of Artsakh is being carried out on the state and regional level. The Nagorno Karabakh Republic was recently recognized by California, the eighth largest economy in world when compared directly to other countries. We are known in the Basque Country and New South Wales. Very soon we will reach the state and international level of recognition. It is our objective and we will work tirelessly in that direction with assistance from Armenia and the Diaspora,” Babayan told Armenpress.
