YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The local offices of the Hayastan Pan-Armenian Fund in France–Germany–and the Netherlands–held the second consecutive European telethon on November 13 to 16–to raise money for the construction of the North-South highway underway in Karabagh.
Six hundred volunteers fielded calls from 10,000 families–businesses–and organizations who pledged a total of 748,000 Euros ($875,000). Volunteers from Switzerland Armenian Fund–and the small Armenian community of Portugal also joined the telethon. Executive director of the Fund Naira Melkumian–said the major part of the fundraising campaign will begin in Los Angeles on November 27–with a twelve hour telethon. Last year’s telethon raised $5 million to help build two sections of the road and a bridge. Currently–sections of the road from Stepanakert to Baluja–Sarushen to Karmir Shuka–and from there to Tsakuri-Hadrut–are being constructed.
Melkumian said that four more sections–totaling 102 kilometers remain for the road to be completed–and hoped that enough funds would be collected to complete the project in two years.
Melkumian also urged citizens of Armenia to participate in the telethon as encouragement for the Diaspora.
