LOMITA, CA–Within days of a crucial vote being held in the U.S. Congress on the Armenian Genocide Resolution (H.Res. 252), South Bay Armenian Americans gathered in force at a town hall meeting with congressional candidate Marcy Winograd.
The town hall meeting, held on Sunday, February 28th, attracted Armenian Americans from across the South Bay, who assembled into the local Armenian Center to share time with Marcy Winograd and discuss issues of mutual concern. Winograd is challenging incumbent Democrat Jane Harman in California’s 36th Congressional District.
In 2007, Jane Harman (D-36) sent a letter to Rep. Tom Lantos, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee at the time, urging him to withdraw H.Res. 106 one day before the resolution was going to be put to a vote. House Resolution 106, similar to H.Res. 252, affirms that the United States must accurately characterize the systematic and deliberate annihilation of 1,500,000 Armenians as genocide.
Marcy Winograd reaffirmed her full support for the proper recognition of the Armenian Genocide and provided encouragement ahead of the vote on the Armenian Genocide Resolution later this week in the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The afternoon town hall meeting provided attendees a deeper understanding of Winograd’s positions on issues pertaining to all families in the community, ranging from the economy to jobs to education. The town hall meeting also provided an opportunity for individuals to register to vote in order to be eligible to take part in the upcoming democratic primary election.
The primary election between Winograd and Harman will take place on June 8, 2010. Individuals interested in learning more about Marcy Winograd’s challenge to Jane Harman may visit her website at: www.winograd4congress.com
