YEREVAN (Yerkir)–A survey released Tuesday by NEWSru.co.il web site titled “Israel and Armenian Genocide” shows that an overwhelming majority of people surveyed believe Israel must recognize the Armenian Genocide.
The topic of the survey was prompted by the Anti-Defamation League’s recognition of the 1915 events in the Ottoman Empire as tantamount to genocide. The ADL’s change in policy found support among many Jewish politicians in the United States but led to tension in relations with Turkey.
The survey proceeded in two stages on August 27-28 and October 2. 561 people took part in the survey and 509 of those participating answered all the questions.
The survey showed that the absolute majority (82.5%) agree with the opinion that Jewish people, who carry the historical memory of the Holocaust, have no right to deny tragedies of other nations. Meanwhile, 72.4% of those surveyed believe that Israel should recognize the mass killings of Armenia’s in Turkey in 1915 as genocide.
43.8% of those surveyed said Israel should recognize the Armenian Genocide even at the expense of breaking off relations with Turkey. 35.2% said Israel’s recognizing the genocide is not worth the backlash of Turkey.
48% think it’s possible to convince Turkey of the necessity to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide, while 33.2% said it’s not likely.
Turkey’s denial of the Armenian Genocide still remains one of the obstacles for its accession to the European Union, while Israel still maintains a policy of non-recognition.
