GLENDALE–The Armenia Fund’s Telethon 2000 which took place on Thanksgiving Day raised $2,482,567 for the construction of the North-South "Backbone" Highway in Artsakh and the building of four schools in Gumri.
The telethon was broadcasted on various cable networks across the United States and the first five hours was also aired in Armenia–the CIS–Europe–and the Middle East.
The Telethon 2000 was started by Armenia Fund Western Region’s Chairman Zaven Khandjian. The program was opened with the prayers of Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian–Prelate Bishop Moushegh Mardirosian–and Arstakh Prelate Archbishop Barkev Mardirosian.
Also present were United Armenia Fund Director Vahan DerGhevontian–NKR Prime Minister Anoushavan Danielian–NKR Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian–and NKR presidential advisor Dzhanna Galustian.
The masters of ceremonies were Editor-Publisher Salpi Haroutinian Ghazarian and reporter Terry Phillips–as well as Hrand Tokhatlian and singer Nune Yesayan from Armenia.
The ARF Western Region Central Committee’s Bedig Kazanjian announced a $10,000 donation on behalf of the Central Committee.
Last year’s telethon raised approximately $5 million.
