YEREVAN (Fact)–Levon Ter-Petrosyan unequivocally rejected new elections–chastised the opposition and reaffirmed his support for the ruling Armenian National Movement during an appearance Friday at the party’s Arabkir regional convention which being convened in preparation for the upcoming ninth ANM Assembly.
Calling the Sept. 25 events following last year’s presidential elections–the most deplorable event in the 3,000-year history of Armenia’s–Ter-Petrosyan stated that his government was able to counter and quell the unrest which he termed "terrorism."
He generalized the opposition by calling them revolutionaries "not by ideology–but because of personal grievances and by their adeptness to resort to brutal force," adding that his government was able to prevent the "opposition’s terrorism."
Ter-Petrosyan went on to criticize his opponent during the presidential elections–National Democratic Union president Vazgen Manoukian–saying that he could not trust calls for democracy by a person who mobilized masses against the National Assembly.
"And now he [Manoukian] is galavanting around the United States and talking about democracy and the entire world is applauding that person. What does that signify?" Ter-Petrosyan asserted.
On the Karabakh question–Ter-Petrosyan stated that Armenia was not afraid of internal or external pressures–adding that Armenia has its own mechanism to deal with those pressures.
