YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Third Congress of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation of Armenia began in Yerevan on Friday. The opening ceremonies were attended by Armenian President Robert Kocharian. In addition to discussing a series of outstanding issues–the meeting will also elect a new Executive Council. The outgoing Executive Council was elected for a two year term in the summer of 1996.
Presidential Adviser and ARF Executive Council of Armenia member Vahan Hovanessian said the Congress had to decide the course of action to be taken by the organization in Armenia. Hovanessian voiced confidence that the Congress would make appropriate decisions.
ARF Bureau representative Beno Tontian then outlined the party’s main objectives.
The Third Congress of the ARF of Armenia’should not only assess the work done in the past years but also outline future activities–member of the ARF Executive Council of Armenia Vardan Petrossian said in his opening address to the meeting. He remained positive that the Congress would make fundamental decisions regarding all political spheres.
In his speech–Chairman of the Constitutional Right Union–Hrant Khachatrian–recalled that the return of the ARF to the homeland was announced at that very hall eight years ago. He suggested that the party’s Armenian body exit its current state of depression. According to Khachatrian–ARF of Armenia officials should set the standard of nobleness–humanity–honesty–boldness and law abidance.
"We hope that the ARF will maintain its relations on the path of cooperation–mutual assistance and the supremacy of common ideology," the CRU chairman concluded.
The meeting proceeded behind closed doors following the official opening ceremony.
In addition to the president–among official guests present were presidential advisers Aram Sargssian–Chairman of the Democratic Party of Armenia; Haroutiun Karapetian–Chairman of the Ramkavar Party of Armenia; Hrant Khachatrian–Chairman of the Constitutional Right Union; and Albert Bazeyan–Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and Vice Chairman of the Yerkrapah Battalion.
