YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Meeting with attorneys in "Trial of 31" case Thursday–"Political Prisoners Council" representatives expressed their grave concerns about the trial.
The representatives told Tigran Janoyan–Bagrat Yesayan and Vova Hakhverdian that the case is an elaborate combination of three concocted scenarios–including–plotting of a coup and acts of terrorism–transportation of arms and murder of policemen.
Janoyan said although all evidence submitted by the investigative agencies had been considered during the judicial inquiry–no intention of perpetrating a coup was proven; in particular–neither the executors of the alleged coup–nor place and time were made clear.
As to the murder of police officer Artur Khachatrian–the attorney said the perpetrator was not positively identified–therefore charges could not have been brought against anyone–much less a group. Also–according to the official–the Grigor Hunanian investigation had been completely partial and biased.
The judicial inquiry established that the transported weapons were needed to guard the laboratory on production of a super weapon–as well as to be used in military operations in defense of Karabakh.
Those present voiced their indignation over the fact that the statement issued by the Security Council on July 31 referred to earlier executed political assassinations–however there was not any material of the kind available in the case–while the killing of the two police officers occurred the following day.
The group spoke about illegal means of extracting testimony–and defendant testimonies of torture and physical and mental duress during incarceration.
It seemed puzzling to the group why the court proceedings had ignored to take such facts into consideration.
Meanwhile–the sentences passed by the Supreme Court of Armenia in connection to the "Sept. 25" events have been appealed by convicted prisoners Abet Petrosyan–Argishti Kivirian–Vahe Beknazarian–Mkrtych Meghavorian–Kim Balayan–Vahe Varsanian and Onik Hunanian–public defender Avetik Ishkhanian told Noyan Tapan.
