YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At a court hearing on Friday–battalion commander of the Higher Military School–Levon Gevorgian–testified that defendant Gagik Karapetian and Tigran Avetissian had voluntarily submitted themselves to the police. According to Avetissian–during the arrest–the police twice hit Gnel Hovhanissian on the head with their guns as he was voluntarily surrendering.
The witness also confirmed the testimony given by a number of defendants in court and during the investigation that hostages were taken in defendant Martin Karapetian’s case.
Gevorgian said that First Deputy Interior Minister Hayk Haroutiunian had told him that if Gagik Karapetian surrendered voluntarily–the police would release his brother.
Defendant Ashot Avetissian said that the meeting at defendant Karapet Ghazarian’s house was called so that those present would be familiarized with his plans of building a laboratory.
He said that the weapons were needed to guard building materials designated for the laboratory–and also to guard the laboratory itself.
Defendant Vahe Hovanessian denied the allegation that they had been full of hatred and animosity for the authorities. "There were ideological differences–which later grew into resentment–but there was neither hostility nor hatred," Hovanessian said.
