ISTANBUL (Armenpress)–A conference on "Dialogue and Understanding in South Eastern Europe–Caucasus–and Middle Asia" kicked off yesterday in Istanbul. The conference was organized by the Istanbul Ecumenical Patriarchate and was sponsored by the head of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation–Arthur Schneyer–and president of the European Commission Jos Manuel Barozzo.
Aside from the head of Turkey’s religious affairs Ali Bardakoghlu–Istanbul Patriarch Bartholomew II and representatives of various religious communities took part in the conference.
In his opening speech Ali Bardakoghlu said that religious leaders must state more clearly that religion and terrorism have nothing in common. He said "the political assessmen’s given at any period cannot be subscribed to the God."
The Turkish paper Aksham wrote that in his message to participants of the conference–US president George Bush said that it is necessary to cooperate in the fight against terrorism and noted that there is no better place but Turkey for the organization of such dialogue.
In his message to the participants of the conference–Pope Benedict the 16th said that the world can live only "through dialogue."
