GYUMRI (combined sources)–The Armenian segment of the CIS’s joint air defense system was inaugurated on Friday. Armenia’s borders will now be patrolled by Russian reconnaissance planes and protected by state-of-the-art S-300 air defense missiles
From the moment the order was received it took the crews of the S-300 launchers at the Russian military base in Gyumri just slightly over five minutes to bring the launchers into a state of combat readiness. Such missiles are capable of hitting targets within a radius of 150 km.
In the context of the commonwealth’s joint air defense system–the Armenian segment of the CIS’s external borders now has the highest level of security. The joint protection of Armenia’s airspace will continue to be strengthened in the future. In accordance with existing accords–the control system is to be completely automated–and new types of hardware and armamen’s will soon be sent to the republic.
In response–Turkish Foreign Ministry officials have stated that all matters related with the national security of Turkey are focused on closely–but have refrained from making further commen’s.
