ABU DHABI (Armenpress)–The Dubai-based Gulf News daily reported that the UAE and Armenia hold identical views on the current fight against global terrorism.
"The UAE and the Republic of Armenia’share a similar position on terrorism believing that terrorism should first be defined," the daily quoted the visiting deputy foreign affairs minister Rouben Shougarian as saying in a lecture about the Armenian position in the international coalition against terrorism.
The lecture was delivered at the Zayed Center for Coordination and Follow-Up.
"There is a need to come up with a specific definition of terrorism. Armenia will host a conference in 2002 to find a specific definition of terrorism–a definition separating peoples’ rights for self-determination and the struggle for freedom," he said.
All conflicts around the world are unique and cannot be judged by one definition. Force is not the only way of dealing with terrorism. The attacks on the World Trade Center were not just attacks on America but on the whole world.
"The attacks ushered in a new reality and consequently the world found itself a terrorist combat zone that crossed cultural and religious boundaries," he said.
"It is necessary to engage in a dialogue of civilizations and cultures to promote global understanding and peace. If the issue is dealt with militarily then we are dealing with the consequences which may resurface in the future. But if we engage in a dialogue–then we can solve the problem from its roots," he said.
