YEREVAN (Armenpress)–"Relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine are developing successfully," said Azeri President Heydar Aliyev and Ukrainian Presidents Leonid Kuchma to reporters in the wake of Azeri-Ukrainian talks in Baku last Thursday.
The Ukrainian president pledged his country’s support to Azerbaijan for accession to the Council of Europe. Kuchma also said Ukraine is ready to support Azerbaijan in the Karabakh conflict resolution.
"Ukraine will do everything in its power to help resolve the Karabakh conflict," said President Kuchma during a meeting with representatives of Azeri public organizations in Baku.
Kuchma–who was awarded the highest Azeri medal of Istiglal by president Aliyev for "his merits in strengthening bilateral ties," said that his country shared the Azeri people’s pains.
As a result of negotiations–an agreement was reached stipulating that Azeri army officers be trained in the Ukrainian Military Academy.
They also discussed issues related to bilateral cooperation between the two countries’ military enterprises–joint military exercises and the creation of the peace-keeping unit GUAM (Georgia–Uzbekistan–Azerbaijan and Moldova).
