YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–On September 10–the Armenian Nuclear Regulatory Authority and the US Nuclear Regulatory Authority signed two documen’s on cooperation over enhancing nuclear safety standards in the event of an emergency at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant. The cooperation will provide re-training courses for Armenian specialists and deliveries of computers–communication devices and other equipment to ensure prompt emergency notification. All equipment will be supplied by the American Mega-Tech Company.
Since 1995 the US Nuclear Regulatory Authority has rendered $2 million of assistance to their Armenian colleagues.
According to US Nuclear Regulatory Authority representative Jack Ramsey–the recent Aragats-99 exercise showed that relevant services in Armenia are ready to notify of emergencies and provide information in the event of nuclear contingencies at the Medzamor NPP. The major shortcomings–according to the expert–concern poor coordination of work of different organizations involved in crisis elimination.
