LOS ANGELES–The USC Friends of Armenian Music are proud to announce that beloved Board Member Seda Marootian, who passed away on September 11, 2007, donated $15,000 to establish the Seda Marootian Scholarship Endowment Fund. Endowment Funds have been created to support aspiring and gifted music students enrolled in the USC Flora L. Thornton School of Music.
Accompanied by Artemis Bedros, President, and Board Members Audrey Gregor and Sossie Sarafian, Seda and her husband Martin Marootian, met with Dr. Robert A. Cutietta, Dean of the USC Flora L. Thornton School of Music, for the presentation and establishment of the Seda Marootian Scholarship Endowment Fund. This visit was held while Seda was battling cancer and demonstrates her dedication and commitment to support Armenian students who are among the most talented worldwide and to help them achieve success in their professional careers in music.
It is not surprising that Seda Marootian’s passion was music and as a young girl she studied the flute; then she and her brother and sisters formed a quartet ‘s two violins, piano and flute.
For several years they played classical music together and performed in concerts. She renewed playing the flute as a senior, studying under Salpi Kerkonian, a recipient of USC Friends of Armenian Music Scholarship. Teaming up with pianist Nevart Jamgotchian, together they took classes at Glendale Jr. College and played for a variety of clubs, organizations and charities.
Seda had a distinguished career as an educator and journalist, graduating from Ohio State University with a BS in Education and a minor in Radio Broadcasting. For eight years she taught English, Journalism, Drama, Directed Radio Productions at stations KGIL and KUSC, and produced the weekly newspaper at North Hollywood High School.
Her many volunteer projects include serving as Executive Secretary for the Armenian Professional Society for 17 years where she administered publicity, organized events, newsletters and mailings. Along with serving on the Board of Directors of USC Friends of Armenian Music, she was an integral part of other organizations including California Armenian Students, St. Gregory Armenian Church Ladies Society, San Gabriel Ararat Guild, Pasadena Sister Cities, Women’s Civic League, Armenian Allied Arts, Pacific Asia Museum, PTA volunteer, and Girl Scouts of America Troop Leader.
Artemis Bedros, President, states that Seda generously contributed her time and energy as a Board member, particularly handling publicity and writing newspaper articles. “We have lost a loving and caring member who will be sorely missed.” Bedros expressed her thanks and appreciation for Seda Marootian’s gift of an Endowment Fund, stating that over the past twenty-nine years, scholarships have been awarded to over 50 students. She emphasized that these accumulated endowmen’s will continue to perpetuate scholarships indefinitely.
