STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)–On February 25–the "Union of Veterans of the Artsakh War" (UVAW) held its constituent assembly attended by the Nagorno Karabakh Republic political and military leaders.
On behalf of the initiative group–Deputy Minister of the Interior Arshavir Garamian made a report. Thereafter–President Arkady Ghoukassian delivered a welcoming address. He called on the veterans to cooperate with the authorities in various creative activities–as well as in settling numerous political–social and economic problems. "Our war was not an end in itself–it was struggle for our land and statehood. We still have to travel a long road for our independence to be recognized," Ghoukassian said.
Armenian President Robert Kocharian–Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Armen Khachatrian–Prime Minister Aram Sargsyan and Minister of Defense Vaharshak Haroutiunian made salutatory messages to the assembly. Speaker of the Karabakh Parliament Oleg Yesayan and leaders of public and political organizations also addressed the assembly participants.
The UVAW constituent assembly elected the leading organ of the organization–a board including 31 persons. Later that day the UVAW Board held its maiden meeting. As a result of an open ballot–Deputy Minister of Defense Colonel Vataly Balasanian was elected chairman of the UVAW Republican Board.
The UVAW constituent assembly also adopted a resolution to support the Karabakh authorities in their pursuit of restoring the rule of law–social justice as well as rendering assistance in strengthening the Karabakh Armed Forces.
The UVAW constituent assembly also issued a statement urging all public and political organizations to develop common mechanisms of resolving the country’s problems.
