YEREVAN (News.am)—Vandals desecrated gravestones at three cemeteries in the Novorossiysk district of the Armenian-populated Krasnodar region of Russia.
The vandalism was discovered on the morning of July 24 when police arrived at the scene. There are no suspects and there were no traces of nationalist or religious marking on the desecrated graves, as has been the case in previous such incidents.
Armenia’s Consul General in Krasnodar, Ararat Gomtsyan, and the chairman of the region’s Armenian community Armen Gevorgyan are scheduled to visit Novorossiysk on July 29 to assess the situation. They will be accompanied by Armenia’s Ambassador to Russia Oleg Yesayan.
The Armenian Embassy in Russia reported that the delegation will assist the local Armenian community with this case. The purpose of the trip is to discuss the vandalism with heads of corresponding agencies
Novorossiysk authorities issued a statement saying the gravestones will be restored and paid for from city coffers. This statement followed several attempts to bring a resolution to the matter such as a note of protest sent to the Russian foreign ministry and a letter by Ambassador Yesayan addressed to Krasnodar’s governor Alexander Tkachev.
