ENCINO– Finishing off a marathon of election activity in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, ANC supporters Nichan Kulukian, Lara Kazandjan, Sahag Majarian, Esq. and Varoujan Deirmenjian won crucial seats in the Neighborhood Council Elections in the cities of North Hills, Tarzana, and Chatsworth.
On October 30, the City of North Hills held its Neighborhood Council Elections. The West Valley ANC endorsed and supported Nichan Kulukian and Lara Kazandjan for Council seats as Service Organization Member and General Board Member respectively. Nichan Kulukian, former Ferrahian educator and retired businessman, is a long time ANC activist supporter of the West Valley ANC. Lara Kazanjan, also an ANC supporter is active in the community and is a parent of two at Ferrahian Elementary School in North Hills. Both candidates won in landslide numbers against their opponents.
The election in North Hills was of particular importance because Ferrahian Elementary School is located within its boundaries where issues of building expansion, safety and traffic are concerns that will be advocated on behalf of our community by our elected representatives.
Nearly a week later on November 8, the City of Tarzana held its Neighborhood Council Elections. The West Valley ANC endorsed and supported Sahag Majarian, Esq. for a Council seat as the coveted Residential representative in the Tarzana Neighborhood Council. Sahag Majarian was the victor over long time incumbent for Residential representative in a sweeping victory. Sahag Majarian is an accomplished attorney who practices law and is a resident of Tarzana. Furthermore, he has been a long time supporter of ANC activities and community initiatives as a whole.
Equally notable is the victory of Varoujan Deirmenjian who on October 24th won a seat for At-Large Member on the Chatsworth Neighborhood Council. Varoujan Deirmenjian is a long time ANC activist and member of the community who resides in Chatsworth.
Nishan Bostanian, Chairman of the West Valley ANC stated "this was a pure grass roots operation and paves the way for the ANC to support our own candidates for Los Angeles City Council, California State Assembly and other higher offices. Our objective is to have effective representation of our communities’ interests. We are not willing to compromise on issues affecting our schools, organizations or residents and to that end we will support candidates for future office that are in line with such goals."
Nareg S. Kitsinian, Esq. West Valley ANC Chairman for the Sub-Committee on Neighborhood Councils stated "all of our candidates dedicated a tremendous amount of time and energy to ensure victory with the support of our sister organizations, the ANC and the community at large. From canvassing, mass mailing, phone banking and networking the candidates engaged members of our community who responded with complete enthusiasm. This success is a testament to our resolve as a community to actively engage higher offices."
The West Valley ANC thanks and congratulates all of the newly elected Council members and community members who worked diligently to ensure victories in these campaigns. The ANC believes this marks a pivotal point of our communities’ increasing involvement in San Fernando Valley politics and throughout Los Angeles and will continue to actively support candidates for other elected positions.
Neighborhood Councils are groups of people that, once certified by the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners, will elect or select their own leaders, determine their own agendas, and set their own boundaries. The goal is to make them as independent as possible from government so that they will have the influence and power to affect citywide and local decision-making far beyond what neighborhood groups have done.
