YEREVAN (Yerkir Media)–Hundreds and possibly thousands of street vendors in Yerevan have lost their sole source of income as a result of a decision by Yerevan’s new mayor, Karen Karapetian, to ban all forms of street trade in the Armenian capital.
Karapetian ordered the ban shortly after taking office a month ago and plice began enforcing it last week, clearing sidewalks of people selling a wide range of goods, from agricultural produce to construction materials.
About a hundred vendors gathered outside the Yerevan Mayor’s Office last week to express anger at the measure and demand a meeting with Karapetian. Neither the mayor, nor his aides agreed to meet the protesting traders.
Yerkir Media’s Anna Davtyan reports on the demonstrations and investigates the consequences of the decision.
