YEREVAN (Yerkir Media)–Hundreds and possibly thousands of street vendors in Yerevan have lost their sole source of income as a result of a decision by Yerevan’s new mayor, Karen Karapetian, to ban all forms of street trade in the Armenian capital.
Karapetian ordered the ban shortly after taking office a month ago and plice began enforcing it last week, clearing sidewalks of people selling a wide range of goods, from agricultural produce to construction materials.
About a hundred vendors gathered outside the Yerevan Mayor’s Office last week to express anger at the measure and demand a meeting with Karapetian. Neither the mayor, nor his aides agreed to meet the protesting traders.
Yerkir Media’s Anna Davtyan reports on the demonstrations and investigates the consequences of the decision.

Well, between the small farmers being threatened to be eliminated by the agricultural minister, and now the mayor of Yerevan ‘eliminates’ the street traders of a right to work… no wonder the numbers of citizens who seek to leave our fledgling Haiastan!! The leaderships in Haiastan have misdirected their efforts (as they are merely capable of filling their own, their families, and their cohorts pockets). Instead, what are these leaders (who are NOT patriotic leaders) doing to pursue and enhance the lives of our citizens of Haiastan… These leaders seem to excel best when they are ‘eliminating’ the means for the honest citizenry to be able to feed their families… Obviously, these leaders should be ‘eliminated’ first!! For when there will be honesty and patrotic efforts in Haiastans’ governments… many will return to their homeland…. awaiting the day when Haiastan is cleared of the dishonesty pursued in their governments.

Growth will be painful. Growth in the Caucasus will be VERY painful. The average Armenian in the Caucasus has an Asiatic tendency that takes him/her towards filth, lawlessness and disorder. I fully agree with the new mayor. Street vendors have to be transplanted elsewhere. Yerevan has to develop – even if it comes at the expense of lower classes. This is a natural process that all modern cities of the world – New York, London, Paris, Moscow, Shanghai – have gone through. No one has the “right” to sell cigarettes or cucumbers on the street in the center of the city. I have full faith in the intentions of this very capable major. Without doubt, Karapetyan is quite a few levels higher on the human evolutionary scale than the previous choban that was in power. Give the new mayor time and support and will be well.
