YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–Representatives of several student unions–as well as youth branches of political parties discussed on Thursday the recent anti-Armenian policies of Azerbaijan at a roundtable discussion–organized by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s (ARF) Nigol Aghbalian Student Union and Youth Union.
The participants adopted a statement–which was signed by about 30 organizations.
The statement says that twelve years after the Karabagh cease fire Azerbaijan still calls for a military solution to the conflict–partly because they have never suffered the consequences of their actions.
"The ever-escalating calls [for a military solution] have resulted in the barbaric murder of the Armenian officer–Gurgen Margarian–and the destruction of unique Armenian khatchkars in Julfa," the statement reads.
The statement refers to the death of Margarian–26–who was studying English at the National Military Academy of Hungary in Budapest when he was brutally murdered by Senior Lieutenant of Azeri armed forces Ramil Safarov. Safarov–who was also participating in the language training course–hacked the sleeping Margarian to death with an ax in February of 2004. The Azeri officer attempted also to kill another Armenian Lieutenant–but failed.
Azerbaijan’s Grey Wolves party named Safarov "man of the year," demonstrated the rampant anti-Armenian sentiment that abounds in Azerbaijan.
According to the statement such acts are possible–"because no one has stopped and condemned the criminals. The massacres of innocent Armenia’s in Azerbaijani city of Sumgait in 1988 was planned and carried out with the same handwriting as the 1915 genocide. But it was never condemned adequately."
It goes on to say that they–"renounce the vandalism perpetrated by Azeri gangs in Sumgait–Karabagh–and other regions. We also condemn the destruction of the cultural and historical monumen’s in Julfa and demand that international political organizations abandon using double standards and issue a political statement over the barbaric acts Azerbaijan has been implementing for two decades."
The statement says that under such conditions–the participating organizations see Karabagh’s full independence as the only possible solution to the ongoing conflict.
