In a family of six siblings, Hovhannes Abgaryan was the little brother that was loved dearly by his older sisters. He was born in Yerevan on March 30th, 1964 to hardworking and loving parents Mkrtich and Margaret Abgaryan, who adored their son. Hovhannes lived a large portion of his life in Armenia, as he went on to serve in Siberia for the former Soviet Union, later completing his education at Yerevan State Academy of Art. On August 8th, 1992 he married the love of his life, Narine Harutyunyan. Together they had two beautiful daughters, Angela and Nelli Abgaryan. They cherished their father dearly. Hovhannes was devoted, caring and always proud of his girls, he loved them so. Hovhannes dreamed big to someday bring his family to the United States. His dream came true on May 28th, 2011 when they arrived to Los Angeles, California pursuing a new life and living the American dream.
He worked hard to support his family in every way, and did everything possible to make them happy. He strived to succeed day and night from one job to the next. Hovo had a green thumb, all of nature would grow around him, he loved plants and birds, and he nurtured them like his children. He was known simply as Keri to most of his loved ones, which means uncle in Armenian. A truly inspiring individual, he made friends with all who crossed his path. As his five sisters, Emma, Angela, Maro, Shoghik, and Anahit always say, “Hovo would give his last penny to anyone who was in need.” He brightened faces and brought smiles to all.
On Sunday June 12, 2016 his life was taken by a tow truck driver who was under the influence, in a tragic accident. The loss has been traumatic and unexpected to his family and loved ones. Hovhannes is mourned by all those who he touched throughout his life, as a husband, father, uncle, and true friend.

Hovhannes, or “John” as I called him, was a friendly, loving and ray of sunshine everytime I approached him. Having known three of his sisters, who, for me went by the names Angela, Ana and Shannon, I was happy to greet and meet him when he came to this country. He, along with his loving wife Narine and daughters Angela and Nellie, are what I grew up believing this country was about. Seeking out and welcoming all those who look and strive for a better life. Not giving up who they are inside, but embracing that “American” dream. I had just seen him not long before this tragic event took him from us. And I will never forget that welcoming smile, and wave of a friendly hand that always told me, you are truly my friend for life. To his family, I pray that God will grant you understanding. For me I pray that someday in heaven I will once again see that welcoming grin. Grasp that friendly handshake. But until shut time, I can only say, “Rest in peace John. It was an honor to know you.” God bless, dear friend.
