The State of the Diaspora

Once again, in collaboration with the Armenian Youth Federation, we are previewing the organization’s quarterly publication, Haytoug, by featuring some articles from the upcoming Spring issue.

Haytoug is a magazine published by Ayf members and addresses issues of importance to Armenia’s from the keep perspective of our community’s youth.

The spring 2009 issue can be found beginning next week in community centers, schools and local book stores. Pick up a copy or visit wwww.ayfwest.org/haytoug.php

“The struggle to maintain one’s identity and culture outside of his or her homeland is not a new one for Armenia’s. For centuries, we have survived exile, dominion under foreign powers and life on foreign soil,” says Vache Thomassian, the editor of the publication and the chairman of the AYF Western US Central Executive.

“However, today, as the ‘old’ concept of Diaspora is challenged by an influx of more recent immigran’s, as the world shrinks under the influence of globalization, and as the Republic of Armenia begins to contemplate how to engage the seeds of the Armenian nation spread across the globe, we must take a fresh new look at the state of the Diaspora and grapple with the modern challenges that face it,” he explains.

In the Spring 2009 issue Haytoug sets out to do just that.

The following are the three preview articles published in this week’s Asbarez:

‘New’ Diaspora/’Old’ Diaspora: Salvation Lies in the Power of Unity
