LOS ANGELES—The Tufenkian Foundation and the Armenian International Women’s Association, Los Angeles Affiliate, have joined together to host a cocktail reception and presentation supporting shelters for abused women in Yerevan, Armenia. This event will be held on Thursday, September 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the residence of Dr. Ara Tavitian in Los Angeles.
USAID, the Tufenkian Foundation and AIWA sponsored the Zangakatun (Belltower) Women’s Support Center in Yerevan and have worked closely together in developing support and raising awareness of the program. This project was created in 2001 by the Tufenkian Foundation in response to Armenia’s social and economic problems, which left more and more families dislocated, vulnerable or facing looming poverty. During the past ten years, Zangakatun Social Services NGO has worked with over 900 Armenian families, helping them overcome extreme poverty and return to functional and productive lives.
Presently, and with partnership support from USAID and AIWA, the Tufenkian Foundation has expanded the program to assist victims of domestic violence and is developing a program to create women’s shelters in Armenia – to house, support and protect victims and their children from their attackers.
The purpose of the September 15 event is to generate support and launch the women’s shelter program in 2011-12. The Tufenkian Foundation is proud to announce they have received an offer of matching funds from USAID to further this project. Along with AIWA, the Foundation is working closely with other organizations in the Los Angeles area, including the Armenian Bar Association, Armenian Relief Society and Armenian Youth Federation, among others, to raise awareness and increase support for the event by attracting their circles of supporters to donate and attend. The evening’s program will include a summary of the project and its issues, as well as an opportunity for Q & A.

Dear Editor
This is with deep regret and anger when I read the emigration of Armenian men from Armenia to neigbouring countries especially to Russia for work and then making second family overthere and forget about their original families (wife and children) in Armenia. Also this is deeper regret that I do not observe any article in Armenian newspapers arround the world about it and obviously not trying to take any action to stop the emigration.
I understand that it is recession all over the world but everywhere their respecting governments take actions and try to do something about it for their nation.
At least what you can do is to alarm the Diaspora and Armenian government to be more serious and take any possible action to stop it.
My source of information was “www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe”
Best regards
Hrair is correct, this is an alarming situation that is causing a breakdown of Armenian families, and the swelling of Armenian orphanages. The Economy in Armenia must be the first and foremost importance and education of our youth. Otherwise there is no strong tomorrow for Armenia.
Please contribute to the economy in Armenia and develop business and commerce so we can employ our fathers and heads of households.
